The Misunderstanding of Social Networking

February 12th, 2010

I give a lot of presentations on blogging and social networking and a theme that seems to consistently recur is people telling me “I’ve tried to use social networks, but I don’t ever seem to get any result from them.”. Looking a little deeper into what they’ve been posting and how they’ve been using social media has given me some insight into why they’re not getting the kind of results they’d like to see.

What I’ve seen is that, even though people are using social media, they’re not changing their paradigm in respect to what they’re posting. Social media won’t work if you just use it to push the same old tired marketing messages. YOU CAN’T WRITE COPY AND EXPECT RESULTS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA!

Client Profile: Grasp Studios (Company Branding)

September 4th, 2008

Grasp Studios, LLC is a progressive videography company that focuses on digital video and media content for the web, headed by Keith Christmas. We were excited about it from the beginning. Keith is a dynamic personality and we wanted to project that with his brand.

Grasp was a project of some scope, including:

  • XML driven portfolio website with Flash navigation
  • Full multi-user blog with syndication (rss)
  • Established A Myspace presence
  • Spot UV business cards
  • Remixed resume layout
  • PHP/MySQL driven business management system for invoicing and client tracking

Project Profile: ShirtsForBands.com

September 4th, 2008

The ShirtsForBands.com project is an internal development to target independent musicians and record labels as clients for custom screen printing and promotional products. There are many musicians among the ranks of 248creative’s specialist network, so we know the market intimately and consider it underserved by the custom decoration industry.

This project involved a multi-faceted approach, a combination of blog promotion, seo, and viral myspace marketing with a dynamic flash design lab to control the customer experience.

Client Profile: TaoGroove.com

September 4th, 2008

Independent electronic music producer Tao Groove required a showcase online for his collected discography of 14 albums. His major concerns were clean, easy multimedia streaming as well as some advanced Lightbox controls for his images and upgraded Search Engine Optimization utilities for his site. Using powerful web 2.0 technologies like syndication (rss and atom) and social bookmark support (digg, stumbleupon, etc) was also a priority.

We went with WordPress as the primary framework, with upgraded options for both Lightbox and our WordPress SEO Package.

The result is clean, fast and search-friendly. All of the content was loaded into the website during development, but it is being released weekly, one post at a time for traffic and link popularity sake.

We also customized the Tao Groove myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/taogroovedetroit) and are currently running a targetted viral marketing campaign for that page.

Costs:
Site Install and Design: $750
Ongoing Maintenance Costs: $250/year (domain, hosting and support)
Myspace Customization: $500
Myspace Campaign: in process
